From Pre-Hellenic cultures until today humans have been determining a number of ethical geometries that survived and strengthened over the most significant epochal changes, above all the accession of monotheism. Those geometries also represent the basis of a social model which imposed its will worldwide over the past centuries.

“The sea after crisis” is a project about the dynamics of moral structures and the role of graphics in society. It is a long trip across etymology and symbology narrated through visual paradoxes, poster campaigns and art interventions to realize in three emblematic cities: Detroit (United States), Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Athens (Greece). The experiences made in those cities will be then collected in a single book.

Some of Vincenzos published works can be found at Printed Matter.

November 6-28

Opening reception, Friday Nov. 6,  7-10pm

Make Way For Progress is a portrait series that focuses on individuals and families being forced from their homes, or their livelihoods, by large institutional forces. In Nicaragua, Chinese billionaire Wang Jing (with the support of the Nicaraguan President) is building a canal that bisects the country. Over 100,000 people will be forced from their homes and land to allow the world’s largest infrastructure project, one which disproportionately benefits the Chinese interests.
In Detroit, Wayne County Treasurer has foreclosed on a record 8,000 occupied properties. Foreclosed properties are sold at auction to the highest bidder, and while some of these families grasped the opportunity to become owners of the home they already lived in, many more lost out due to the increased desirability of Detroit as a commodity, with auction prices far outreaching those of previous years. These images from come from an ongoing work-in-progress.
These are the faces of people who will be displaced by the all mighty Progress.

Garrett MacLean is a photographer living and working in Detroit. Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from Middlebury College with a BA in Creative Writing. He has exhibited his photos in NYC, San Francisco, Oakland, and Detroit, with an outdoor exhibition in Guatemala this winter. He has shot for TIME, VICE UK, Under the Influence, Hyphen, and Yes Magazine, amongst others.

THINKING COLON: New works by KYLIE LOCKWOOD

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, February 7
7PM-10PM
Show runs through February 28th

Two round solid forms, one on top of the other, not touching but inherently linked.

:

These forms draw attention to a division, a gap, a space in between two separate but connected things. They are a joint. They join. A passage from inside to outside. A phase in which material is broken and converted into a substance suitable for absorption and assimilation. A state like that of the soft setting stage of concrete. The pliable period that is only momentary, where you can take your hand and make an imprint in the surface. The state before it is solidified into rock and after the liquidity that runs through your fingers. The liminal space in between.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Kylie Lockwood received her MFA from Hunter College and BFA from the College for Creative Studies. She has exhibited internationally in Berlin, London, Madrid, New York, Philadelphia, Miami and Detroit. Kylie has participated in a number of residencies, including Skowhegan, the Hambidge Creative Residency Program and the Contemporary Artists Center. Her work has been written about in the Metro Times, Infinite Mile and the New York Times.
